About Julie
Julie is a cute girl. She likes pink. She enjoys 80's music, dancing, volunteering for good causes, God/Jesus, and keeping busy. Julie is currently an event coordinator at Stanford (boo). Yes, that's right folks, Stanford. She received her B.A. in Integrative Biology from UC Berkeley and went on to snatch a Master of Business Administration in Hospitality Management from San Francisco State University.
Here's a classic college-Julie quote:
"norm just sent me the url for the AA recovery website. ohmigoodness!"
About Tom
Tom is a silly boy. He likes blue. He also holds a black belt in Wado-Ryu karate and used to break wood boards to be macho. Nowadays he eats potato chips, watches football, and plays video games. Tom also makes video games for a living (after graduating from UC Berkeley with a B.A. in Computer Science), so one could say his life is a complete waste. However, he has found Julie as a soul-mate, so things can't be so bad.
About the Cheng Family
Julie’s semi-traditional Chinese family is made up of two very loving parents, one caring aunt, and two amazing younger siblings. Mom and Dad both hail from Taiwan, but met while in graduate school in Texas (of all places!). They fell in love and moved north to North Dakota, where Julie, Paul, and Lisa were subsequently born. Julie loves and thanks her parents more than she can ever express for their courage and strength, in immigrating to the U.S. and starting new lives that included language barriers, professional challenges, and eventually three often-rambunctious and misbehaving kids. The unconditional love that they have for each other and for their kids is the foundation of the family. Aunt Wendy has been an integral part of Julie’s life ever since she can remember – visiting during Christmas, taking family vacations and being a generous host in Ohio. Paul and Lisa are fellow Cal grads (Go Bears!) who recently struck out on an entrepreneurial venture in Taiwan. Without her younger “di” and “mei,” Julie’s life wouldn’t be half as enriched or amusing or fun as it is. She can’t thank Paul and Lisa enough for the times they’ve made her laugh, cry, and helped her become a better “jie” and a more whole person. As a family, they like to watch movies, eat good food, travel to visit relatives, debate around the dinner table, and give each other advice on everything, whether asked for or not. Like any big, happy family, there are some times of frustration, but never any times without love.
About the Gutschow/Bui Family
Tom’s family still resides in his hometown, Fountain Valley, a “Nice Place to Live” in Orange County, California. With a mommy, a step-daddy, an older sister, a younger brother & sister, two nieces (the eldest one in curls), a brother-in-law, and several dogs, they all live a very loud, hectic, happy, dysfunctional suburban lifestyle as depicted on the TV show “The O.C.” (did I mention very loud?). Originally from Vietnam, Tom’s mommy and OG daddy narrowly escaped the clutches of Communism, only to be imprisoned by the demands of Capitalism. Through years of hard work, Tom’s parents were able to build many self-owned businesses, send their children to private Catholic schools, and embark on several home improvement projects. Very grateful, Tom left his family behind in Republican country to journey to the liberal wasteland of the San Francisco Bay Area. These days, Tom’s family can be seen underneath cars, on top of roofs, painting walls, chasing kids/dogs, rebuilding houses, styling hair, and generally causing a ruckus. If you are spotted, stand as tall as you can and make yourself appear as large as possible. Loud noises do not scare them, but nodding, smiling, and laughing may distract them.
